Murder detection rate better in Pune, worse in Thane: Police

Pune and Nagpur police fare best in the state when it comes to solving murder cases, the statistics provided by the Pune police says. Bombay High Court earlier this month had severely criticised Pune police for failing to solve builder Nikhil Rane murder case that rocked the city in November last year, and sought statistics of unsolved cases. As per Pune police, 137 cases of murder were registered in the city between June 2009 and June 2010, of which 125 were solved. The detection rate was 91 per cent. In Nagpur, murder detection rate is 92 per cent. Mumbai police lags behind (89 per cent success rate) with 186 of 210 murder cases having been solved in the last one year. In Nashik, this rate is 87 per cent, whereas in Thane, it is 83 per cent. Overall in the state, 89 per cent of murder cases (2275 of 2559 cases) have been solved in last one year. With this statistics, prosecution today argued before the bench headed by Justice B H Marlapalle that Pune police's record was not so bad. A special investigation team has been constituted for detection of remaining 11 unsolved murder cases in Pune, the court was told. Rane's case has been handed over to CID. Rane's wife Ashwini has filed this petition seeking CBI probe as Pune police have not nabbed the culprits yet. Today, the court asked CID to file progress report in four weeks.
