NAGPUR: A petitioner has moved Nagpur bench of Bombay high court highlighting Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) apathy while operating as many as 169 vehicles which are unfit to travel. These vehicles, mainly used for collecting garbage from the city areas, are running without passing certificate or insurance.
Social worker Jitendra Ghosekar has filed this plea, alleging massive bungling in the maintenance funds of these vehicles citing documents sought under RTI. Shirkant Khandalkar was counsel for the petitioner.
Taking serious cognizance of the petitioner's allegations, a division bench comprising justices Sharad Bobde and Arun Chaudhari issued show-cause notices to the municipal commissioner, town planning department and NMC's traffic department returnable within two weeks.
According to Khandalkar, the NMC has given contract to Kanak Resources for collecting garbage in the city, however it too was operating vehicles which are in poor shape and they get escaped from paying various taxes under the pretext of operating on behalf of the corporation. He also contended that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has no control over such vehicles. The petitioner prayed for directions to RTO and NMC to look after irregularities while operating these unfit vehicles
