The Nagpur Municipal Corporation this year has decided to make Nagpur a sickle cell free city. It has also planned a physiotherapy unit, a blood bank, CAT scan at cheaper rates, and dental care facilities for the poor. NMC has allocated almost Rs 1 crore for these projects in annual its budget this year.
NMC hospital committee chairman Baba Maind has said that sickle cells disease was hereditary and treatable and should not be considered a curse. He said public needed to be made aware of the disease. No one knows that every sickle cell patient, rich or poor, has the right to avail free blood, medicines and treatment since the last seven years, he said.
In city, that has more than 10,000 sickle cells disease patients, a special centre will be started at Pachpaoli Ayurvedic Hospital at Kamal talkies square soon. All types of tests including Haemoglobin electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing, haemoglobin solubility etc will be conducted here free of cost. The centre will be run by a non-government organization, Maind added. Rs 20 lakh have been allocated for the project in NMC annual budget.
NMC has also planned to open a dialysis centre for financially weak kidney patients at late Prabhakarrao Datke Dignostic Centre at Mahal. Dialysis is the only treatment for patients with kidney disorder. The process is expensive and where the patient has to undergo treatment twice or thrice a week to remove toxins from blood. Usually it costs Rs 4,000 to Rs 8000 per month, Maind said. Civic body will offer offer dialysis to poor patients at Rs 750. NMC will spend Rs 500 for each cycle from its kitty. Almost Rs 40 lakh have been allocated for this project.
Maind said, "this year, we are planning to set up NMC blood bank especially for poor patients to provide free blood for thallassaemia and sickle cell disease patients. Medical tests like haemoglobin percentage, blood sugar etc required for pregnant women will be done in the centre free." NMC also offers a free ultrasonography test to thousands of would-be mothers belonging to poor section at 75 private hospitals registered with it.
Maind said, "the beneficiary patient will have to submit a letter of NMC's health officer or health link workers to undergo the test at private hospitals. The health department of NMC will pay Rs 200 as fee for each test to the hospital concerned."
Civic body has further planned to undertake a 'cataract free Nagpur' projectand would provide facilities to patients who needed to be operated upon. According to estimates, over 20,000 patients are suffering from cataract. NMC has tied up with a renowned charitable trust to offer operations to senior citizens free of cost soon, he added.
