Wife’s petition against senior cop dismissed by SC

The Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed against Mumbai’s IPS officer Hemant Nagrale by his ex-wife Pratima on Friday morning.

Pratima, who hails from Nagpur, had accused Nagrale of ill-treatment, as a result of which the state government had put him in side postings as chief vigilance officer of the state electricity board and then as inspector-general of police (administration).

The couple had an arranged marriage. They filed for divorce in 2008 and the final decree came on February 25. The custody of both children was given to Hemant Nagrale.

In 2008, Pratima also alleged that Hemant had amassed disproportionate wealth using her name.

Later, she filed a writ petition in the High Court, claiming that the police was not taking any action on her complaints.

The HC admitted the petition and ordered a probe by the crime branch. “Rakesh Maria of the Crime Branch filed four reports and gave a clean chit to Nagrale,” said Hemant’s lawyer Ravi Prakash.

Maria, who was given charge of the inquiry, examined over 20 witnesses including the couple’s children, close relatives, friends, doctors and maids.

Unhappy with the report, Pratima asked for an inquiry by the Director General of Police, saying that as Nagrale was an Inspector-General, his juniors or colleagues would feel pressured while conducting a probe against him, Prakash added.

The HC dismissed this petition, after which Pratima approached the Supreme Court. The matter was heard by Judges SS Nijjar and Sudershan Reddy on Friday, who too dismissed the petition.

Hemant said, “Truth prevails. I am free from all the charges my wife had made.”
