The Nagpur Municipal Corporation will soon become perhaps the first in the country to put up national flag on a 230-foot high mast. The giant tricolour will come up at NMC's Ambazari Garden. It would be one of the highest masts to fly the Indian flag.

The national flag made of special fabric will be up 24-hours throughout the year. The 230-foot flag post will have a decorated crest, a senior NMC official informed. He said necessary permission from the Airports Authority of India ( AAI) and state government had been obtained for installing the post made of steel on a one acre patch of land in the garden. Civic body has already allocated Rs 1.5 crore for the flag post and beautification of the entire area.

It will be erected on the north side of the Ambazari garden where, given its height, it would be visible from many parts of the city. The flag is supposed to be a source of inspiration for all and is expected to add to the tourist interest in the city. NMC has also planned to provide information and history about the flag near the post, the official added.

At least three companies have shown interest in developing the Ambazari lake and garden as per NMC plans. The project will be awarded to the company that meets the financial and technical criteria. It has been designed by noted landscape architect Vishwas Madhav who had prepared master plans for Anand Sagar in Shegaon.

It envisages developing a systematic pathway around the lake for walkers and joggers. The boating facilities will also be restarted. The NMC is also planning to develop a club house and a 'Mini India' theme park with different cultures depicted through murals. Large-scale plantation of trees will be undertaken to boost the greenery.

The project also includes extensive cleaning of the lake and strengthening of its wall with railings. "If the bidding companies propose any other source of income, we are open to ideas since the project is to be developed on BOT basis," informed the official.

Ambazari garden and lake used to be a favourite destination for families and had boating, joyrides and other entertainment. The garden became a desolate place after boating and amusement facilities were discontinued owing to disputes between two operators. NMC's plans to revive the garden were gathering dust since years. Municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal believes with new plan, Ambazari will get back its lost glory.
