Prachi's Kathak dominates fest's Day 2

With five events spread over two sessions, the second day of the ongoing Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Smruti Sangeet Samaroh was a cultural overload. Two Hindustani classical vocal performances performed on the day. The connoisseurs of music soaked in the gayaki of two famous singers, one from Kolkata and the other from Pune.

It was to the poignant strains of violin that the morning session began as R. Sridhar presented the Vatapi Ganapatim in Raag Hansdhwani. Sridhar, who has earned the sobriquet of Master of Strings, has trained in the Carnatic style of music. The Ganpati Vandana, when played through the strings, had a soul of its own that emerged as the artist delivered it straight from the heart.

His presentation of a bhajan in raag Sindhu Bhairavi was a treat for the South Indian patrons of Carnatic music who were present in decent numbers. Equal mention is due to the accompanist Harinarayan on ghatam and Shankar Raman on mridangam who weaved a magic through their fingers as they fell on the percussion instruments.

The spell created by Sridhar's violin left a lingering impact even as vocalist Indrani Mukherjee took the stage. Performing for the first time in Nagpur, Mukherjee who was selected for a scholarship by the ITC, duly impressed the audience.

Beginning with the raag Shudh Sarang, Mukherjee set the basis of her rendition in vilambit lay with ghar ye shubh aaja. She remained a purist with her schematically performed alaap. Never once deviating from one note at a time, by way of vistaar, she made her first reach to the octave a powerful event as she moved on to Darshan bin lage dukhan jiya in dhrut lay, concluding with Sudh budh lay saakhi more.

The Bandish in Gaud Malhar Dadarwa bole re badariya was complemented by Bharat Bhushan Goswami on sarangi and Apoorv Mukherjee on tabla.

The evening session belonged to actress dancer Prachi Shah who delivered a near virtuoso performance in terms of her connect with the audience. Beginning with a Ganpati vandana she went on to present a vilambit tukda of Jaipur gharana ending it with a paran with 45 spins. Her guru Ganesh Hiralal, who was also present, steered his disciple through the dhrut lay in teen taal with a uthaan, a lovely kavit and paran with 27 spins. She concluded her performance with a thumri-based presentation Kahey gaye ghanshyam.

The second presentation, a jugalbandi presented by young artist from Ambala, Deepak Gulzar on tabla and Ashok Kumar on Sitar was an earnest effort. The evening concluded with a vocal performance by Anand Bhate from Pune, who displayed his brilliance with gayaki as he began with raag Miya Malhar followed by a thumri Piya to manat nahin preet puran janat nahi. On audience demand, he sang a pad from the Marathi drama Manapman before concluding with his rendition of aga vaikuthichya raya in raag Bhairavi.

On its second day the music festival organised by SCZCC gave a cultural treat to the city.
