A diminutive cop who made a mark in Nagpur

Ankush Dhanvijay, the 29th commissioner of police of Nagpur who completed one year in office on Wednesday, may consider Monica Kirnapure murder case as probably the toughest challenge in his stint. The popular sentiment over the ghastly murder of the engineering student in March even cornered the state government. But the diminutive top cop bounced back by having the case successfully cracked and even bagging a substantial cash prize for the force.

Dhanvijay shattered the myth that it needed a towering personality to command a force of nearly 7,000 personnel. An officer of the 1982-batch Indian Police Service (IPS), Dhanvijay's earthy approach remained his hallmark since he took over the reigns from Praveen Dixit one year back. Emerging from shadows of the allegations projecting him as a close buddy of a politician, this former controller of legal metrology (Weights and Measures) Government of Maharashtra has carved a niche for himself.Dhanvijay's entry also transformed the approach from defensive to aggressive policing. Dixit's objective was protecting human rights even if it meant sacrificing detections. Dhanvijay proved far more street smart.

An officer involved in the investigation of Kirnapure case remarked it would have been impossible if there had been no relentless supervision from Dhanvijay. "CP engaged more than 50 men and officers. He needed every detail by the minute and sat for meetings till past midnight. He would also drive out alone to meet an informer which was uncommon for an officer of his rank," said a senior inspector. Being a doctorate in law, Dhanvijay also showed his flair in application of Indian Penal Code.He ensured that stringent sections were applied in accident cases and also experimented with chain-snatching cases.

Though chain-snatchings troubled him too, city police have also busted several gangs involved in it.Mounting cases of murders have blotted his stint but Dhanvijay ensured that culprits were brought to book in most cases. If Monica murder case brought Dhanvijay into limelight, his recent handling of the Baba Mustafa burial issue further proved his calibre as a strategic planner. The attack on an RSS functionary too had left the city facing communal tension. Dhanvijay cracked the case bringing the culprits to book.
