Good rainfall in Marathwada, north Maharashtra and parts of Vidarbha have lent momentum to sowing activity in the state. So far, sowing has taken place on 77 per cent of the state's cultivable land.
Barring the Konkan division, the other divisions have reported more than 55 per cent sowing. Last year, the state had reported 53 per cent sowing in the same period due to a prolonged dry spell. Interestingly, Aurangabad division, usually prone to drought, has reported 103 per cent sowing. The normal cultivable land in Aurangabad division is 15,92,500 hectares and sowing has been completed in over 16,42,200 hectares, said a statement issued by the state agricultural department.
Of 33 districts, 15 districts have received more than 120 per cent rainfall which prompted the farmers to complete sowing.
The total cultivable land in the state is 1.32 crore hectares, of which sowing has been completed on 79.55 lakh hectares. Cotton is the major cash crop after sugarcane, which has reported 113 per cent sowing on its normal sowing area of 29,55,900 hectares. The current area under cotton is 33,53,400 hectares.
The land under foodgrain is 74,20,700 hectares and sowing has been completed on 44,00,500 hectares. The sowing percentage is 59 and is likely to go up in the coming weeks if the rainfall continues, the statement said. In the oilseeds category, sowing has gained momentum due to favourable conditions in Vidarbha.
The Amravati division has reported 110 per cent sowing of oilseeds. It has the largest area under oilseeds — about 8,18,100 hectares —and till date sowing has been done on 8,97,200 hectares. The Nagpur division has reported 68 per cent sowing of oilseeds, which is second to Amravati in land under oil seeds. The normal sowing in Nagpur division is on 6,40,500 hectares and till Monday farmers had completed sowing in 4,36,800 hectares.
Sowing of cereals has been carried out in 24,59,300 hectares, which is 49 per cent of the normal area of 49,48,200 hectares. Also, farmers have completed over 80 per cent of sowing activity — 24,36,500 hectares — of the normal area under pulses by Monday, the statement added.
This year, sugarcane plantation has gone up drastically due to better returns last year.
