Starbus commuters, who recently faced many hardships during the recent Bharat Bandh on July 5, will have to once again face similar problems on Thursday.
The entire Starbus fleet of 290 is likely to remain off the road as over 700 drivers and 1,000 conductors who, under the banner of the Nagpur Star City Bus Union (NSCBU), have given a bandh call to press for their long-pending demands.
Union president Raman Paigwar said that city bus operator Vansh Nimay Infraprojects Ltd was "exploiting" the drivers and conductors. "When we raised the issue with the management, the services of almost 35 employees were terminated," he said.
On Thursday, the workers hope to put some pressure on the management by striking work. Apart from demands to reinstate all the sacked employees, the union's charter of demands include seeking a proper behaviour by ticket checkers and traffic controllers with bus drivers and conductors, appointment letters to all employees from NMC-owned Nagpur Mahanagar Parivahan Limited (NMPL), extending the ESI scheme benefits and salaries as per law and a weekly off.
