s demand for making Nagpur the tiger capital of the world is gaining traction, the Maharashtra government seems increasingly supportive of the idea. Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has announced the government was proposing to designate Nagpur as tiger capital of the state.
Agencies reported that Chavan told visiting mediapersons that government had decided to make Nagpur the gateway to the tiger land as Maharashtra was among states having high tiger population. "States like Gujarat and Kerala are promoting their assets... In order to stay in competition we will now promote what we have in abundance," Chavan said.
TOI has taken up the cause of making Nagpur the tiger capital of the world given the city's closeness with several tiger reserves and its infrastructure that can support a large tourist industry. Maharashtra has a tiger population of 169 according to latest census. Nagpur and its nearby reserves in Maharashtra have 148 of these. In addition, the city was close to many tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh like Kanha, Pench, and Satpuda. International tourists to Bandhavgarh also frequently travel via Nagpur.
"Nagpur is the major store house of tigers as the Vidarbha region has three tiger reserves and more than five sanctuaries. In all, Maharashtra has four tiger reserves and 34 sanctuaries," A K Khetrapal, principal chief conservator of forests (Wildlife) said. Tiger population in state has gone up from 103 in last census to 169 in latest estimation. All the reserves have reported an increase, he said.
Maharashtra ranks after Uttarakhand in terms of increase in the tiger population, followed by Assam, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Maharashtra is among the few states to have actually notified the buffer zones for its tiger reserves for enhanced conservation and protection. These zones range from eight to ten kilometres around the boundary of reserves.
CM Chavan stated that the government was also planning to raise the standard of guest houses at all tourist places to provide comfortable stay andexperience to the visitors.
