Sonu (17) was stoned to death in front of her mother by her 20-year-old unemployed husband Mahesh Yadav. The couple fell in love two years ago and got married in a temple. Sonu was studying in the sixth standard, while Yadav was working.
Yadav, who fled the spot, was nabbed by Dhantoli police from the railway station. "He had planned to leave the city," said the police. "Though he confessed to his crime, he is not feeling guilty. He said that he doubted his wife's character and hence killed her," added the cop. Dhantoli police registered a case of murder.
"After he fled the spot, we thought he might be feeling remorse. But we were shocked when he called me in the morning and wanted to know whether Sonu's body was taken by the police," said the deceased's mother, Sunita Netam, who works as domestic help. Yadav also threatened Sunita of dire consequences if she opened up to the cops. After tying the knot, the couple stayed together for just a year because Yadav quit his job and started drinking and beating up Sonu everyday. "Sonu was staying with us at our Takia residence in Dhantoli. Yadav would often come and abuse and beat her up," said Sunita, who helplessly saw her daughter's brutal murder.
Family members alleged that a few months ago, Yadav hit Sonu on the head with a heavy object. Sonu suffered severe injuries and was rushed to GMCH where she was administered 14 stitches. "Cops were informed but they did not take any action against Yadav. Had they arrested him then, he would not have dared to kill her," added Sonu's mother.
At times, Yadav would apologise to Sonu and then take her out. But later, she would return after getting hit by Yadav. On Friday, Yadav took her out saying they would have fun and return at 12 pm. "I was woken up by his loud abuses. When I opened the door, I saw him beating Sonu with a stick,'' said her mother.
