Mob sets NMC vehicle afire after mishap near Ramtek

The driver of a Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) vehicle was arrested after the car rammed into three persons on a motorcycle in the wee hours of Sunday near Ramtek. The driver abandoned the car and fled the scene of the accident, but surrendered at a Ramtek police station some time later. An angry mob tried to set the car afire, causing a lot of damage to the vehicle.

The NMC driver, Ishwar Sukhadeve (38), was arrested in Ramtek on Sunday morning after he surrendered at the police station. Sukhadeve had dropped ruling party leader in NMC Pravin Datke at a rest house in Ramtek. Sukhadeve was then heading towards Khindsi when he hit three men riding a motorcycle at around 1am on Sunday.

Following the accident, Sukhadeve deserted the vehicle and rushed to the nearest police station in Ramtek. Meanwhile, an angry mob, which was probably part of a wedding procession, pelted stones on the NMC vehicle and set the car afire.

On reaching the spot, the police immediately referred the three victims to Mayo Hospital in Nagpur. All three have suffered fractures in various parts of the body and are critical, said PI YT Rathod.

Head constable HH Khan Pathan confirmed that the driver was not drunk. "We conducted medical tests and he was not found to be drunk," he said.

Datke confirmed the incident and said, "I was in Ramtek to attend a party workshop and had taken permission from the Mayor for the car."

Datke claimed that he had all the necessary papers with him. "I was not in the car at the time of the accident. I was told some people set the car afire and have heavily damaged the vehicle. The driver has lodged a complaint," he said.

The road where the accident took place was dark, without any street lights. The police are yet to ascertain if the three victims on the motorcycle were speeding. However, the cops found that the car was on the wrong side of the road, said Rathod.
