Nagpur SSC | State SSC results slump by 8%

Much before the Maharashtra state board HSC and SSC examinations this year, officials had launched an awareness drive to prevent students from indulging in malpractices. They also made strict arrangements in and around the centres to prevent students from using unfair means.

On Friday, when the results of SSC examination conducted in March were declared, the idea seems to have worked out successfully, with statewide results declining by as much as 7.68%. Last year, the overall results were 78.72% while it was 80.18% in 2009. The decline was seen in the HSC results too, which witnessed a drop of almost 7%.

Even the 'Best five' policy of the state government launched last year, which led to a huge surge in aggregate percentages, has failed to lift students' spirits this year.

After Latur shocked last year with a sharp drop in results, this year it was Amravati division's turn. After topping the charts last year with an impressive pass percentage of 86.16%, it plummeted by almost half to touch a low of 43.32% this year. Amravati division finished at the bottom among eight divisions.

If Amravati's results was a shocker, Nagpur division was on the same track, with a slump of 8.96%. It however improved its position slightly among other divisions by climbing to fifth spot from last year's sixth, with a pass percentage of 69.68%.

Pune topped the charts with pass percentage of 80.39%, followed by Mumbai at 80.03%, Kolhapur at 79.76% and Nashik with 79.30%. Nagpur is above Aurangabad, which has 54.99%, and Latur at 56.93%.

Except Latur and Kolhapur, all other division witnessed negative results as compared to last year. Latur improved on its results by 12.45% in comparison with last year while Kolhapur marginally improved its percentage. Last year, Latur had plummeted to them bottom with an abysmal pass percentage of 44.48%.

Meanwhile, the repeater's performance has gone down sharply by 10.73% as compared to last year. Their pass percentage is 28.33% as compared to 39.06% last year and 43.71% in 2009.

The fairer sex once again continued its domination as far as pass percentage is concerned. Following the trend of last many years, 74.06% girls passed as compared to 68.58% boys. Interestingly, many students scored more than 100% due to addition of 25 sports quota marks.

The board chairperson attributed the downward trend in pass percentage to stringent measures adopted by them. "The citizens in Amravati and other divisions supported the board in their stand against malpractices in the examination," she said.

Following this, the cut offs in top junior colleges are expected to come down. This will led to more vacant seats in junior colleges, as fewer students had appeared in the exam and results also showed a downward trend. The only positive thing that came out of this year's results is marginal increase in the number of students who scored above 90%.

Some academicians noted that though the state board witnessed a drop in results, other boards showed increase in their pass percentages.

Mathematics - both general and its easier option - emerged as killer subject followed by science and English as third language. The passing percentage for the three subjects reduced by 8.82%, 5.57%, and 2.66% respectively.

Students will get marksheets from their schools on June 27 from 3pm onwards. The last date of applying for supplementary exam is July 7 and with late fee the date is July 11. Students can also apply for class improvement scheme (CIS).

Gondia tops in Ngp div

Amid decline in Nagpur division results, Gondia stole the limelight by recording an impressive pass percentage of 80.05% among fresh candidates. It was followed by followed by Gadchiroli at 76.96%, Nagpur 76.47%, Wardha 74.06%, Bhandara 71.99% and Chandrapur 64.50%. Among fresh candidates in Nagpur division, 1.96 lakh students from 2,459 schools appeared for the exam of which 1.37 lakh were declared successful with 69.67%. Chairman Chandramani Borkar termed the overall results as satisfactory.

Interestingly, the percentage of students who scored 90% and above has increased slightly. About 3,186 students have scored above 90% marks in the division, followed by 4,012 students who scored between 85-90% marks. This means there will be tough completion for getting a seat in top science and commerce colleges.
