Sept 26 deadline to file development report on Shegaon shrine

Peeved over slow pace of development at Shegaon shrine, the Bombay high court's Nagpur bench recently, asked the Maharashtra government to clarify its stand on contributing .Rs65 crores for the development work of the shrine which is thronged by lakhs of visitors every year.

A division bench - comprising justices Bhushan Dharmdhikari and Pramod Kode - directed the government to file progress report on the issue before September 26. The court's directives came while hearing a petition filed by two Shegaon citizens - Anandilal Bhutada and Suresh Jaipuriya - contending gross neglect by the government towards the shrine while praying for its development in wake of Gajanan Maharaj centenary. Earlier, amicus curiae Firdos Mirza pointed out that the government had filed its periodic report in May which mentioned that development work of .Rs66.25 crore is being carried out at Shegaon in which Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan will bear the expenditure of .Rs65 crore and remaining amount will be invested by Shegaon Municipal Council. He, however, stated that latter was not aware of its share. E

ven AR Patil appearing for the Sansthan, which manages holy shrine, argued on the same lines. Mirza further contended that as per the government's report, the construction of drainage system at Parikrama Marg is in progress, however it is also mentioned that land acquisition process for widening of that road is yet to be started. He pointed out that there is likelihood of duplication of work due to lack of coordination between various departments.

Countering his arguments, government pleader Nitin Sambre assured that the government had already sanctioned.Rs250 crore development plan for the shrine and the work will be completed within three years i.e. by 2012. For better coordination between various departments, the government has appointed Public Works Department (PWD) as nodal agency, he added. The judges then asked the respondents to ensure proper coordination between various departments to avoid duplication of work. The petitioners and respondents were asked to file an affidavit on any modifications needed in the ongoing development work. During last hearing, the court had expressed anguish over unhealthy and filthy conditions near the shrine.
