Upgrade Ajni railway station, demands Muttemwar

City MP Vilas Muttemwar on Wednesday raised in Lok Sabha the issue of development of the Nagpur railway station to world standards. He has urged the railway ministry to consider Ajni railway station instead of the old Nagpur main rail station for the purpose. Taking up the matter under rule 377, Muttemwar said in his submission that Nagpur was mentioned along with eight other cities chosen for upgradation of rail stations to global standards in the budget speech of 2008 by the then railway minister.

However, he said the main station at Nagpur is a 125-yearold heritage structure and there was little scope in making alterations in it. There is a long-pending public demand for development of Ajni railway station which is in the heart of the city and easily accessible for the vast majority of the city. But no headway has been made in developing Ajni, the MP lamented. He also mentioned that in her budget speech in 2009, the minister had announced the upgradation of the railway hospital in Nagpur and converting it into a medical college-cum-hospital with all the necessary infrastructure.

Minister of state for railways K H Muniyappa during a visit to the city had also given an assurance to follow up the proposal. The minister had also visited the Ajni railway station and the over bridge and inspected the conditions. There is urgent need to replace the RoB at Ajni which is also 125 years old and is in a bad shape because of overuse. Muttemwar has urged the ministry to take up the work of Ajni railway station upgradation and construction of a new RoB as a top priority to meet the needs of a city fast growing as an important education, health and international cargo hub.
