NAGPUR City BJP slams corruption charges by Congress

Senior BJP leader and standing committee chairman Sandip Joshi has termed the allegations levelled by NMC opposition leader Vikas Thakre against corruption by the BJP as "political motivated". Joshi said on Wednesday that he (Thakre) has no 'locus standi' to make charges of corruption against a person like Nitin Gadkari, who towers above him in political hierarchy. Joshi charged leaders from Congress party, which is ruling both central and state governments, with corruption at all levels.

Joshi also questioned the role played by the opposition Congress in the corporation. "It is ignoring the common man's issues in the city," he said.

Citing an example of scams in the corporation, Joshi pointed out that recently poor quality rice was discovered being distributed to NMC schools under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. "Also, the state government had tried to increase property tax, but the BJP opposed it, while Congress leaders preferred to remain silent," he alleged.

He also cited the parking problems faced by Starbuses. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had assured during the winter session in a one line statement that Mor Bhavan transfer issue would be solved within eight days, but till date nothing has happened. "Had local Congress leaders tried, Starbus parking issue could have been solved. But they are not interested in resolving issues related to the common public," he said.

Joshi also said that the BSUP and SRA housing schemes of the state government were actually displacing slum dwellers and hurting their interests. He also questioned statements by Thakre on pipelines contract to Nagarjuna Construction and cartel issues, when both cases were pending in Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court.

About the tree guards scam, Joshi explained that since the amount required for purchasing tree guards was Rs 10 lakh, the proposal was approved by municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal. He also refuted the allegations that the work order was given despite receiving a single bid. "As many as 30 applications were received," he claimed.

Joshi also denied the allegations by Congress corporator Prashant Chopde. Referring to minutes of the meeting, the standing committee chairman claimed the tree guard priced at Rs 220 were made of bamboo mat, while those priced at Rs 652 were made of bamboo sticks and are of good quality.

He also justified the decision of Nagpur Vikas Aghadi ruled NMC's decision to construct cement roads. He claimed that cement roads constructed during the tenure of Nitin Gadkari have saved the civic body Rs 85 crore, since these roads didn't require any maintenance work.

Meanwhile, ruling party leader Pravin Datke has challenged Thakre to prove corruption in purchase of 240 Starbuses. He said that he would approach mayor Archana Dehankar to dissolve the five-member subcommittee inquiring into a complaint of cheating and fraud by NMC officials and VNIL in tendering process for city buses.
