Lakhs of aspiring IITians are keeping their fingers crossed for the IIT-JEE 2011 results which will be declared on Wednesday. The results will be available online from 8am on the official web site of the IIT-JEE.
Coaching class owners in Nagpur are divided in their opinion whether the cut-off marks will increase this year or not. The reason for increase in cut-off marks is backed by the logic that every student will get bonus marks for IIT's printing mistake in the question paper. In addition to that, many students felt that the exam was much 'easier' than anticipated by them.
Sarang Upganlawar, director of ICAD-SL, said "The IIT-JEE has accepted the mistakes in the question paper and declared that full marks will be given to all candidates for three questions. It simply means that even if all other parameters remain unchanged, cut-off will increase by about 12 marks compared to 190 of JEE 2010. The expected cut-off is around 205."
Many students felt that the question papers were 'easier' than what they had anticipated and this could well be one of the reasons that may result in higher pass percentage. Nisha Kothari, director of IIT-Home, says the pass percentage keeps on increasing every year roughly by 1%, and the same is expected to continue this year as well.
However Kothari is also skeptical about the standards of the famed IIT-JEE papers. "As far as the question paper is concerned, many students said it was easy this year. I really believe that the quality of questions in IIT-JEE is going down every year. I have a feeling that the anxiety level of students was high due to which performances may slip."
Another coaching centre too believes that the cut-off may be lower than last year. "Lot of people believe that the paper was easy and cut-off is going to increase as compared to last year. But you have to remember that there was no partial marking this year. I believe that the cut-off is going to be lesser than last year's 190 figure," said Chandrakanth Satija, regional director, Aakash Institute.
About 4,800 students appeared in 12 centres across Nagpur. Upganlawar believes that results for Nagpur students are expected to be better as there are 'better teaching facilities and greater awareness among parents' as compared to previous years. Apart from local coaching centres, now national coaching institutes are either planning or have already started franchisee in Nagpur.
It is expected that for 9,618 seats, around 12500 ranks would be declared. As some new institutions will be using JEE 2011 score for their admissions, extended merit list is also going to be declared, which will benefit hundreds of candidates. Across India, more than 4.8 lakh students had appeared for the exams at 1,051 centres.
